I recently read Soccernomics and it talks about exactly this. I'm curious why there haven't been more successful clubs in Munich when places like London and Madrid have more than one. Interesting stuff!

I suspect a lot of it comes down to how football clubs were formed in both countries. In the UK, they were side projects that were often attached to factories and other businesses. In Germany football clubs were born out of regional sports centres.

It is hard to believe 1860 or Unterhacken can not squeeze some more financial support from the region.

I've kinda answered that question in response to another comment, Eddie. But I guess it's a question of "success begets success" and when these companies starting taking football/Bayern seriously the likes of 1860 and Unterhaching were in a complete mess.

Maybe it’s time for some sort of a German entrepreneur or company to invest and beef up Munich 1860

They have! As recently as 2011, when Hassan Ismaik pumped money into the club. But it's just led to even more disaster, involving Ismaik refusing to pay the necessary fees to let the club obtain their licence for the 17/18 season due to arguments with supporters. It's been such a long and sad story for the club. But it would be amazing if they could get back on their feet, climb back up the league tables and re-establish themselves as a club worthy of regional investment in Bavaria.

Loved this text and the video as well.

Thanks for this, Stefan.

I would love to read something from you regarding the strong identity culture in Bayern and more about the meaning of "Mia san mia" for Bayern Munich.
